ATV Scams

Written on May 13, 2010 – 12:09 pm | by Diane |

It’s pretty amazing that some people have nothing better to do than rip people off while they are struggling through this horrendous economy? I have been looking for an ATV online for the past month. We thought it would make life a little easier when we move up to Hastings. We’re looking for a utility ATV to help clear paths through the woods, move trees and of course to ride through the mud when we have some time to play.
I have been searching Craigslist and Oodle, and have a found a few ATV’s that were reasonably priced that were listed in areas that were accessible to us. Of course, the most reasonable turned out to be scams. Over a one week period this is what I encountered:
The first was a Grizzly and the ad had plenty of pictures and the description suited our needs. When I wrote to inquire as to whether it was still available I almost immediately received a response. The woman claimed that the Grizzly had been her husbands and that her husband was killed one month ago in Iraq. She said she needed to sell it, but it was now with her in North Carolina where she relocated to be near her parents. She went on to further say that she would send the quad to us at her expense and that we could inspect it. Only then would we then pay for it through Ebay Motors where they have a buyers protection policy.
This sounded like a great deal, but knowing that very rarely is something too good to be true, I responded that I wouldn’t buy it sight unseen. I thanked her and wished her well, not really giving the circumstances a second thought. UNTIL…
The second ATV, I inquired about was a Polaris Sportsman. I again sent an email to find out whether or not it was available. This is the response that I received:
“First I want to thank you for question about the 2006 Polaris Sportsman. The quad is in perfect condition, no damage, perfect shape and the mileage is 534 . It has all the papers and document and I am also the owner. The price is $2,500 including shipping to your address (only in USA). The quad is located in USA but currently I am located in London, United Kingdom, because I just finished the divorce with my husband and I have moved here to my parents for a while. The transaction will be made only through Ebay vehicle purchase protection program also the payment will be made through eBay and only after you will receive the quad , I will receive the payment.”
Hmmm….sounded familiar! Now, of course understanding that this very well was yet another scam, I did not even waste my time to respond.
Onward with my search, I found a Suzuki for sale on Oodle.com to which I replied with the same email asking whether or not it was still available. The person responded with more specifications about the ATV and told me that the price was $2400 including shipping and delivery taxes to my address. Thinking that this ATV was worth looking at, I responded that we were close enough to take a look at it and would like to schedule a time that we could see it. This was the response that I received:
“I’m in New Jersey due to my work (I’m an Air Force Msgt.) and I have the ATV here with me. I can deliver it to your shipping address (I will pay for the shipping and insurance fees) and I will agree to let you test and inspect it for 5 days just to be sure. In this 5 days you will test the conditions of the ATV. If something won’t be like you expected to be you can return it without any expense. It will come with all the paper work. The payment will be made after you will test and inspect the ATV.
The deal will go through eBay Motors. In this way both of us will have the required assurance that the deal will take place well. A refund policy will be included. If you agree with these terms please reply me with your full name, shipping address and phone# so that i can forward them to eBay. They will send you a complete list with instructions.
Thanks

Air Force Msgt. Jonny Olseen
Air National Guard
McGuire New Jersey”

Now this was too much and I was getting frustrated. I Googled “Jonny Olseen, Air force” and discovered that there was an entire Complaint Board page about him. It included the numerous alias he uses.
At that point I felt very fortunate that I did not get involved, as many who had been taken by him for thousands of dollars. I emailed him a link to the site and told him that I had filed a complaint with the
IC3 (The Internet Crime Complaint Center). I did not here from him again.
Apparently, these low lives set up dummy Ebay web pages and when the payment is made, it goes directly to them. You will not receive the merchandise and have no recourse. Sadly, many people don’t know enough to fully investigate before purchasing and have been ripped off.
As somebody who uses the internet for 90% of my purchases, it’s disheartening to realize that nobody and nothing can be trusted “carte blanche.” Researching the seller and seller’s website has become a major part of every purchase. It’s sad to know that while many of us work hard to make a living to survive, others are preying on the conscience while sitting on their ass in front of the computer contriving new ways to deceive us and rip us off.

    Hello~
I actually just wanted to say thank you for writing this up!
My parents have been looking for an ATV recently and yesterday came across an ad for on Kjiji.
They found one for $2000 from a woman who had just divorced her husband and was now living in London. They were pretty excited about it, but I sensed something wasn’t right, googled ATV scams and your blog post was one of my first results.
I showed my parents and they’re no longer going through with the transaction.
Thanks so much, you’ve saved them a lot of money!

  3. By Diane on May 26, 2010 | Reply

I’m so glad that you read my post in time. I feel really bad that so many people are being taken for a lot of money from these scam artists. Apparently, from what I’ve read it’s across the board on big ticket items.
I am still looking for an ATV and do still come across these low lives quite often. I would prefer not to, but am considering actually going to a dealer.
Wish your parents luck and tell them to be overly cautious. A good rule of thumb is not to go through links provided, but to go to the actual websites ie: Ebay, PayPal and any banks.
Thank you for writing, it’s reassurance that I’m doing some good here!

this is becoming such a huge deal that this morning i found at least 15 to 18 scams just on buysell.com . all atvs are between 1400 to 2900 with no contact info. i replied to a few with the same response its not with me or its at a warehouse or i have a new job over seas. i think more action and responsibility should be taken by the add providers. just my opinion

  5. By Diane on Sep 21, 2010 | Reply

Chris, I agree with you that more action and responsibility should be taken, but you really don’t know it’s a scam until you respond. Most ads have a location until you inquire about the item and find out it’s not where it is stated to be in the ad. What’s incredible to me is that these ads can be found, on what I thought were credible and reputable sites.
I don’t imagine anything will change any time soon. I have filed reports, as I’m sure many people do. The information including email addresses and contact information is all over the internet referring to these scams, but have you ever heard about any of these scam artists getting caught?
I feel bad for the REAL people that are trying to sell items because it’s probably more difficult to instill trust. What used to be simple, (buying on the internet) has now become a challenge requiring an investigation. It’s so frustrating that I have stopped looking on the internet for our ATV. I find it all very sad that there is so much deception.
Thank you for commenting, good luck with your search.

I went through a similar occurence looking for an ATV online. Once again, oodle.com was the culprit. I found a reasonably priced ATV that was close. Of course, when I emailed the person, I got a response from… you guessed it, Air Force Msgt. John Q Monroe, Air National Guard, McGuire New Jersey, which is nowhere near where the listing described the owners location. This is the response.
    Hello,

Sorry for mailing you so late!
I’m glad that you’re interested in my ATV.The ATV is in good condition, has no technical damages at all, no scratches or dents,no hidden defects. The ATV is street legal and accurate.Never been dropped, laid down, raced or in an accident. It has been regularly maintained. It runs like brand new with no issues. The exterior is in excellent condition, tires are in good shape, brakes work well. It comes with all the documents needed for registration, it has a clear title and it can be registered into your name at any time… There are no known problems with the ATV as far as I know.

The total price is $1,850‏ including shipping and delivery taxes to your address.

I AM SELLING UNDER THE MARKET’S VALUE BECAUSE I NEED LIQUIDITY IN ORDER TO FINISH THE HOUSE THAT I AM BUILDING.

If you are decided we are going to have a safe deal.

The incorrect grammar and improper use of English seemed to indicate taht it might be a foreigner, similar to those Nigeria “I have a safe full of gold coins I need you to claim” scams. Immediently smelling something fishy, I emailed back saying I would not buy unless I could see it in peson, and I got a similar response, recommending that we use Ebay motors to make a payment. Of course this ended the deal for me. Just thought everyone should know about this.

hello, just read all of your posts. we were about to purchase a polaris ranger, but we were suspicious, as the seller, was rushing us, and then stated he had no phone, he was on special mission, and couldn’t use a phone, and his name was msgt.john Q monroe…. same as yours !!! omg.. these people never stop… same thing, with ebay protection n all, and western union money, ect. ect… so we called ebay motors, giving them this guys name, and thre was no monroe listed at all, even for previous sales.. the lady said it was a scam, and ebay motors does NOT insure anything that is not bought off of them.. we didn’t let on that we knew, so we emailed him, asking himn for the ebay agents phone number that we were to send a fax receipt, and western union money too.. we said we needed it before we went ahead with the sale.. We never heard back from him.. so we are turning him into several different places… this is sad.. we needed this for our cabin, and grandchildren, and to almost be ripped off of almost 3000. what in the world do we do to protect ourselves????
thanks so much for your post, as it confirmed what ebay said… thanks so much…..

So glad to have helped. I still fail to see why these crooks are still getting away with these scams. It’s so widespread across the internet, yet it seems as though there are no “higher authorities” taken any action against them. It’s not that these scam artists are difficult to find. Unfortunately, buying on the internet, which used to be an easy and convenient way of making purchases has become one of apprehension and deceit. Good look to you on your search for a safe purchase.

hello, thanks for replying.. do u think he reads your site?? don’t matter to me, but he just keeps doing it.. we found just in 2 days that he has been under 3 names.. monroe, olseen, and now robert q.burgart.. isn’t that something.. i plan on telling ebay again, but im sure they won’t do anything. it’s agains the law to use there name, and also using other people’s names. we found out he was using the monroe name. there really is a monroe in nj in the service, & this guy using his name.. well, if u hear anymore, let us know. thank you…

  10. By Diane on Jan 7, 2011 | Reply

I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t take the time to read anything and that he spends his time trying to rip people off. I’m not surprised that you found him using other names as well. He’s also not the only one doing this. There are an abundance of scam artists out there which is why I gave up trying to find a legitimate sale on the internet. Telling Ebay about it will probably prove a waste of time, but I guess it’s worth a try. I’ve filed several complaints with the IC3 (The Internet Crime Complaint Center) and obviously it hasn’t made a bit of difference. I would appreciate you keeping me informed of your progress.

Same letter, different name for the Msgt. One thing that helped to tip me off, I cut and pasted the full description and price into google search. The same ATV (pic and all) showed up in CO, UT, TN and MA.

Glad you found out the truth before you had gotten scammed. Tell me how ridiculous this is that these people haven’t been caught. As you can see more and more of us are becoming wise to them, but apparently the authorities that can actually do something about it are “turning their heads.” Typical!

Msgt. Robert Q. Burgart is definately a fraud!!! I stupidly did not google his name until after I was defrauded. I sent him the total payment for a 1991 Boston Wailer. The Ebay notices looked real to me and I did not investigate as I should have. If anyone else sees an add using the name Msgt. Robert Q. Burgart and New Jersey Air National Guard as his location BEWARE!!!!!!! I am going to report to IC3 also. I wish I would have googled his name before I sent the money!!!!!!

    Greetings Diane,
Thank you soooo much for this venue to post this terrible scam. It is not just ATVs.
I have been looking for a couple of weeks for an inexpensive Jeep as we need a second car for getting back and forth to work here in Michigan.
I had corresponded with a couple of real people during that time period and thought this was someone I forgot about or missed.
We are extremely strapped for money and have only scrounged up 2k cash to purchase a vehicle.
This would have been devastating to our family!

These are the 2 e-mails that were sent to me.

Lisa, I’m so sorry that you fell prey to this scam artist. Rest assured you are not the only one as he would have stopped by now if the scam were not working for him. I would definitely file a report, but I can tell you that I have already filed two since last May and obviously not a thing has been done about it.
Rik, I’m glad you found out in time. Those emails seem to be the standard although I had received emails claiming a husband killed overseas, a divorce situation and unemployment as an explanation as to why the item was being sold so cheap.
Please continue to spread the word. It seems to be the only way to prevent others from being scammed.

My husband got a call from a man who asked him if we own a 2003 Basstracker boat. We do. He found a website advertising our boat for $2900.00! He sent us the website and emails he had received from Robert Q Cornwell. The man found us by calling Georgia DNR and checking the registration numbers pictured on the boat. This Cornwell guy is using the same exact ad that was posted one year ago on Ebay when we purchased the boat. The emails he sent are very similar to the ones posted above. The man who called us felt like the deal was too good to be true and starting checking it out. I’m going to report this as well. I hope no one falls for this and “buys” our boat. I hate SCAMS!!! Especially when it’s using my boat!

Wow, Elizabeth, that’s a new twist. It’s one thing for this fraud to be constantly executing these scams, it’s another to actually involve someone as he is you. I would definitely report it, but as I’ve stated in my previous posts, I’m not sure anyone that can do something about it will actually take action. Good luck and please keep us informed.
